The federal government has said it is aware the harsh effects of economic recession on Nigerians.
Lai Mohammed, the minister of information and culture stated this while receiving a delegation of the National Council for Women’s Societies (NCWS) in Abuja on Tuesday, September 20, 2016.
The minister who likened recession to a married man who refused to save during the time of plenty added that the current economic crisis has affected the ostentatious way of life of young Nigerians.
“Before this time, you will see young people popping expensive champagne anyhow at parties. When you ask, a bottle maybe up to N100,000. But now, the music has changed and so we all have to change our dance,” the minister said.
Speaking on the role of women in national development, the minister said women bear the brunt of the recession.
He said the federal government has concluded plans to commence the payment of N5,000 to vulnerable Nigerians beginning from this month.
Mr Mohammed also said the federal government is working to improve the living condition of all Nigerians, especially women and children.
