An Akure magistrate court has sentenced a phony youth corps member, Mrs. Rabiu Umar, to six years imprisonment on a two count charge of impersonation and attempted fraud.
The prosecutor, Inspector Jimoh Ibrahim, told the judge, Magistrate M.O. Adewumi that Umar was arrested by security operatives at NYSC Secretariat, Igbatoro Road, Akure, on July 4, 2014 while seeking for redeployment.
Umar, who did not attend any higher institution in Nigeria was inconsistent with her responses when cross-examined as she claimed to have attended National Open University and Ekiti State College of Education.
She said: “I am a widow from Borno State. No, I am from Lagos state, I mean from Ondo State. I attended National Open University, Akure and Ekiti State College of Education. I dropped out of school when my husband died and nobody to sponsor my education.”
The prosecutor also revealed that several NYSC identity cards, a Nigerian Airforce identity card and fake documents were found in Umar’s possession when she was arrested.
Sensing that her charade was over, she would eventually plead guilty while Magistrate Adewumi sentenced her to three years imprisonment for each count, with the sentence expected to run concurrently.
